Pre-Operative Instructions — Cataract & Refractive Surgery

Pre-Operative Instructions | Cataract & Refractive Surgery | Saluja Eye Care Center, Indore

A. General Guidelines (for All Patients)

  1. Medical Evaluation:
Complete your pre-operative eye check-up, including blood sugar, blood pressure, and physician fitness certificate if advised.
  2. Medication Review:
Inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking — especially blood thinners, anti-diabetic drugs, or cardiac medicines.
  3. Fasting:
If you are undergoing cataract surgery under local anesthesia, light meal  is usually permitted unless advised otherwise.
For LASIK/ICL, fasting is not required — but avoid heavy meals immediately before surgery.
  4.   Avoid Cosmetics:
Do not apply eye makeup, creams, perfumes, or aftershave on the day of surgery to maintain OT sterility.

    5.  Clothing:
Wear loose, comfortable clothes and avoid jewellery or contact lenses.

B. Specific for Cataract Surgery

  1. Use prescribed antibiotic eye drops (as instructed) 2–3 days before surgery.
  2. Continue regular systemic medicines unless advised otherwise by Dr. Saluja.
  3. Bring your spectacles and previous eye reports on the day of surgery.
  4. Arrange for a family member or attendant to accompany you.
  5. Avoid driving yourself to and from the hospital.

C. Specific for Refractive Surgery (LASIK, PRK, ICL)

  1. Discontinue contact lenses before surgery —
    • Soft lenses: 3–5 days
    • Rigid lenses: 2–3 weeks
  2. Avoid eye makeup for 3 days before surgery.
  3. Wash your hair and face thoroughly on the day of surgery.
  4. Eat light meals and stay hydrated.
  5. Bring sunglasses for post-operative protection.
  6. Avoid perfumes or deodorants on surgery day (as vapors interfere with laser calibration).

D. Additional Tips

  • Relax and rest well before the procedure.
  • Do not rub your eyes before or after surgery.
  • Inform your surgeon immediately if you develop cold, cough, fever, or any infection before the scheduled date.
  • Keep your medical reports, consent forms, and billing documents ready for smooth admission.
